How to use Sunscreen properly.

The most important skin-care product available to prevent wrinkles and skin cancer is sunscreen, but most people do not use sunscreen correctly.

Exposure to ultraviolet light, UVA or UVB, from sunlight accounts for many signs of premature ageing and more severely, skin cancers.

First – Pick the Proper Sunscreen

The SPF measures the amount of UVB absorption, but there is no method of reporting the UVA absorption. The only way to determine if a sunscreen protects against UVA and UVB radiation is to look at the ingredients. A good broad-spectrum sunscreen should have aa minimum of SPF 15 and contain either avobenzone, titanium dioxide, or zinc oxide

Next – Apply it properly

Most people use sunscreen improperly by not applying enough. They apply only 25% to 50% of the recommended amount. Sunscreen should be applied liberally enough so that it forms a film when initially applied.

Layer, layer, layer

The most efficient way to ensure you have applied enough is to layer it. So start with your Vitamin C serum, follow with your moisturizing sun block and if you want to apply makeup, make sure it is a mineral foundation, liquid or makeup and your set to go.

At Lyte we prefer the Skinceuticals 30+. It is a lovely fine sun block that remains active during the day, doesn’t block your pores and is suitable for sensitive skin.

Until next time
