Keratosis-Polaris

Keratosis Pilaris (KP) appears as small pointed pimples, usually on the upper arms, thighs, and buttocks. The condition is usually more apparent during the colder winter months and often clears up in the summer. Keratosis pilaris is a very common skin disorder affecting many people of all ages. Although a harmless, benign condition Keratosis Pilaris it can be unsightly.

Keratosis Pilaris presents as numerous small, rough, red, or tan bumps primarily around hair follicles on the upper arms, legs, buttocks, and sometimes cheeks. Keratosis pilaris creates a “goose bumps,” “gooseflesh,” or “chicken skin” appearance on the skin.

What causes  Keratosis-Polaris ?

KP has no known cause, but tends to run in families, and is believed to be hereditary and/or related to a deficiency in Vitamin A. It is also reported that people with atopic dermatitis are more likely to experience Keratosis Pilaris.

The pimples or bumps are caused by the blocked hair follicles make the skin feel rough (like the skin of a plucked chicken) and dry.

Although the upper arms, thighs, and buttocks are the usual problem areas for KP, it may also arise in areas of greater cosmetic concern, including the face, particularly in children.
